USA Triathlon is excited to join the Loppet Winter Triathlon for the 2020 USA Triathlon Winter Triathlon National Championships! The event will take place on Sunday, March 1st at Theodore Wirth Regional Park, just west of Downtown Minneapolis. Don’t miss your chance to compete in triathlon’s most unique form!
Just minutes from downtown, this expansive urban park with man-made snow and The Trailhead, a brand new adventure center, guarantees a full winter triathlon experience. New name, new location, same heart!
The course will utilize the Theodore Wirth trail system, which includes both natural and manmade (via snowmaking) ski trails. Athletes can expect snow and groomed trails, regardless of weather in the lead-up to and on race weekend.

Eligible Age Groups and Awards
Participants have the opportunity to qualify for the 2021 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championship through the 2020 USA Triathlon Winter Triathlon National Championship. It is the policy of USA Triathlon to provide awards only for those age groups which qualify for this level of competition. Age groups will begin with 17-19 and continue in 5-year increments through 80-84. The minimum ages to compete are based on the ITU Competition Rules (appendix A, page 98). Athletes must be the following age by December 31st of the year in which the event occurs.
- For the 2020 USAT Winter Triathlon National Championship, athletes must be 17 by December 31st, 2020.
- For the 2021 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championship, athletes must be 18 by December 31st, 2021.
Please note that this event may have additional categories other than what is listed here. USA Triathlon will only provide National Championship awards for the listed age groups. If you are wishing to compete at this event, but do not meet the minimum age requirement, we encourage you to participate in one of our youth events. Note: this event may allow athletes under 17 to participate. In coordination with ITU rules, they will not be eligible for USA Triathlon National Championship awards.
Team USA Information
The 2020 USA Triathlon Winter Triathlon National Championships in Minneapolis, MN, will qualify athletes for the 2020 ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships (date and location TBD). At the Winter Triathlon National Championships, the top 18 in each age group, rolling down to 30th place after applying the age-up rule, will qualify for the World Championships.
Note: All spots offered via the rankings system are subject to spots being available on the roster.

As competitive athletes and members of the triathlon community, you know there is no better feeling than succeeding in your endeavors in sport. As a competitor at USA Triathlon events, you have a responsibility to demonstrate the highest standards of sportsmanship per the USA Triathlon Rulebook (Article III, Sections 3.3 and 3.4, Line b.), and as such, should always show respect for the sport, your fellow athletes, race staff, officials, volunteers and spectators. Each individual athlete shares this responsibility, which includes refraining from the use of improper language and conduct detrimental to the community at large. This rule will be strictly enforced and disrespectful language or conduct will not be tolerated.
