Courtney Retains World Cup Lead With Second Place at Vallnord

(July 2, 2017) – Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif./Specialized Factory Racing) raced to another World Cup podium finish on Sunday, taking silver at Vallnord, Andorra, in the women’s U23 event and maintaining her overall lead in the World Cup rankings.

Courtney posted a time of 1:17:55, finishing 1:08 behind winner Sina Frei (SUI), who finished in 1:16:47. Evie Richards (GBR) was third in 1:18:39. Haley Batten (Park City, Utah/Clif Pro Team) gave Team USA two top-10 finishes as she crossed the line in seventh place with a time of 1:23:34.

Later in the day, Erin Huck (Boulder, Colo./Cannondale-3Rox Racing) was the top American rider in the elite women’s race with an 18th-place 1:32:23 effort. Yana Belomoina (UKR) took the win in 1:26:04, followed by Annika Langvad (DEN) in 1:27:41 and Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa (NOR) in 1:28:00. Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt./Clif Pro Team) was 26th in 1:36:23.

In the elite men’s cross country race, Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo.) finished 13th in 1:25:47. Nino Schurter (SUI) posted the winning time of 1:23:28, followed by Mathias Flueckiger (SUI) in 1:23:46 and Jordan Sarrou (FRA) in 1:23:47.


On Saturday, the downhill event took center stage in Vallnord with American Aaron Gwin (Wildomar, Calif./The YT Mob) placing fifth in 4:08.796. Troy Brosnan (AUS) was fastest down the course in 4:06.236, followed by Greg Minnaar (RSA) in 4:06.456 and Danny Hart (GBR) in 4:08.642.

Gwin now sits fourth in the UCI World Cup rankings with 986 points, trailing Hart (1,374), Brosnan (1,121) and Minnaar (1,097).
Cross country and downhill action resumes next weekend in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, at the next stop of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano.
