Simple Definition of athlete

: a person who is trained in or good at sports, games, or exercises that require physical skill and strength

I have seen questions like this on different social media posts, Am I an athlete? Or How do you define being an athlete? Or something like that. So, the questions often go like this: Do you consider yourself an athlete?  What is your definition of an athlete? In your words, what makes someone an athlete?

This definition is from Merriam-Webster dictionary; I think it is fitting. I think sometimes we doubt ourselves and this makes us question if we are an “athlete”. I say if you have been training for something, workout a few times a week, do any event or activity that requires physical effort than you are an athlete.

I also like the argument that an athlete that competes in a particular sport is not an athlete because it is not really a sport, or certain individuals are better athletes because of the sport they compete in. If everyone remembers, this is how the original Ironman race in Hawaii started many years ago. Runners, cyclists and swimmers were all pounding their own chest saying their sport was harder than the other two sports.

I guess the point I am trying to make is this: That you don’t have to be the fastest, strongest, most flexible, or talented to be an athlete. People, please have positive thoughts and know that if you are “a person who is trained in or good at sports, games, or exercise that require physical skill and strength” then you are an athlete. And that is not me telling you that you are, it is the Merriam-Webster dictionary saying it.

  1. Wow I’m not sure this could have been any better timed since this has been on my mind for a while. I don’t think of myself as an athlete even though others call me that. It feels awkward as though I’m committing some kind of trickery.

  2. I completely agree! I had a conversation to were I referred to myself as an athlete, and was told I wasn’t one. I responded that I’m only if I wasn’t an athlete I was only pretending to run four marathons this year. Which shut that person up. Saying you an athlete is a state of mind to train hard. If you say your not an athlete and you train for a marathon for example then you won’t think like one and take short cuts.
