January 2016 Training Summary

This is my end of January 2016 training summary, and I would like to start out by thanking PBS Triathlon Club for organizing the Ironkiwi Challenge and the Black Triathlete Association (BTA) for the invitation to be a part of their club for the National Challenge Competition (NCC), organized by USA Triathlon. Both of these events assisted in motivating me and pushing me to do more than I normally do in the month of January. I l would also like to thank my wife and son for putting up with me this month.

As this month comes to a close, I have the third month of the NCC to look forward, to in February, and the Athletes Feeding Kids virtual event, in March, to compete in, as well. The third month of the NCC is the run focus month and the Athletes Feeding Kids event has five different catorgies. I think I will do the full triathlon event, but it also offers an ultra-marathon event, ultra-cycling event, ultra-swimming event and a couch potato event.

Consistency has played a big role in accomplishing the miles on the bike, run and yards in the pool. Setting a goal for the month and logging my miles as I went, kept me on track, setting me up to accomplish my goals. My wife was very important in making sure that I followed a food plan. Planning meals in advance and sticking to the plan helped me to lose the weight I gained when triathlon season ended, as well as fuel my current level of training.

I started the month at 195.5 pounds and by the 31st my weight was down to 178.8 pounds. I average 2500 calories a day. I was very consistent with my food intake, not varying more than 200 calories from one day to the next. My body measurements are below:

1 Jan                                        31 Jan

Neck                                        16”                                          15.5”

Chest                                       41”                                          40”

Right Upper Arm                    13”                                          12.5”

Right Forearm                         10.75”                                     11.75”

Waist                                       38”                                          35”

Right Thigh                             23”                                          22.5”

Right Calf                               16”                                          16”

When comparing January 2015 to January 2016, I had zero yards of swimming in 2015, but this year I have managed to get in the pool 12 times for 12.68 miles of swimming. I had 15 training rides last January for 328.72 miles, whereas this year I have managed to get 41 training rides in for 566.1 miles. In January 2015, I got in 18 runs for 85.23 miles and this January I got 32 runs in for 118.6 miles. I did manage to get in more strength training in January 2015 than this year. Last year I got 21 events for 11 hours of lifting and this year I only got 13 strength training events in with 7:15 hours of lifting.
